We develop offshore wind in Sweden
Sweden is entering a period of rapid electrification. Industry, transport, heating and new green investments will require significantly more fossil-free electricity than Sweden produces today. The Swedish Government has stated that the electricity system should be planned for at least 300 TWh of electricity demand by 2045, compared with today’s significantly lower consumption levels. This means that Sweden will need a major expansion of fossil-free electricity production, grid capacity and flexibility over the coming decades.
Offshore wind can play an important role in meeting that need. Wind conditions at sea are generally stronger and more stable than on land, enabling large-scale production with high output over the year. Sweden’s marine areas have substantial offshore wind potential, and the Swedish Energy Agency has pointed out that existing marine plans for offshore energy production are not sufficient in relation to the country’s growing electricity demand.
Auramaris Offshore is being developed to contribute to this transition. Located far out in the Bothnian Sea, approximately 34 km from the nearest coast, the project is planned for up to 108 wind turbines with a maximum total height of 370 metres. Based on the project’s preliminary design and the strong wind resource in the area, Auramaris could generate around 9–10 TWh of fossil-free electricity per year, depending on final layout, turbine technology and operating conditions.
This would represent a significant contribution to Sweden’s future electricity supply and to the electrification of industry, transport and society. For the region, Auramaris can also create long-term opportunities linked to ports, logistics, maritime services, operations and maintenance, while supporting Sweden’s transition to a competitive, fossil-free energy system.
